Economic Development Through Farming

Since 2016, New Roots has operated an educational farm that equips local farmers with sustainable, income-generating practices.

In a region where unemployment is high and farming often yields little return, we’re creating real opportunities through job creation, hands-on training, and post-harvest processing. By helping small-scale farmers add value to their land and products, we empower them to better provide for their families.

Pastured Poultry Production

Our focus is on pasture-raised chickens, along with pigs, cows, corn, and soybeans. Pastured poultry means chickens are raised on open pasture, where they can forage naturally and live healthier lives. This method improves animal welfare, produces more nutritious meat, and reduces the need for antibiotics—benefiting people, animals, and the land.

Butcher Shop

Our butcher shop is more than a place to process meat—it’s a center for economic empowerment and community health. By offering clean, professionally packaged, locally raised meat, we reduce reliance on imports and increase access to nutrient-dense food.

The shop also provides stable, dignified jobs for women in a region where employment is limited. In this fast-paced, team-oriented environment, women gain valuable skills, confidence, and income. Nothing goes to waste—every part of the animal is used, with nutritious portions made available to staff and the local community.

By combining food security with job creation, our butcher shop is strengthening families and transforming futures.

Feed Mill

To invest directly in our community and reduce dependence on imports, we built a local feed mill that sources corn from over 200 Haitian farming families. Instead of purchasing feed from the Dominican Republic, we now keep that revenue—more than $15,000 annually—circulating locally.

This shift not only creates jobs and strengthens the economy, but also provides farmers with a reliable market for their crops, turning hard work into opportunity for their families and future generations.

Tractor Services

Twice a year, we provide plowing and disking services for nearly 100 local farmers—many of whom are elderly and previously worked their land entirely by hand.

With access to tractors, farmers can plant more efficiently, increase crop density, and enjoy higher yields with less physical strain. These services bring both productivity and dignity to a new generation of farming in our community.

Together, these efforts are building a stronger, more self-reliant agricultural economy in rural Haiti. One farmer, one family, and one harvest at a time.
